redc crossWorld Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, May 8, marks more than 150 years of Red Cross humanitarian efforts around the globe. May 8 is the birthday of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement founder, Henry Dunant and it is on this day that we recognize the local and global impact of the Red Cross mission. Here in the U.S., the American Red Cross has been helping people in communities large and small for more than 130 years.

The American Red Cross is the humanitarian services organization that provides disaster relief, services to our military personnel and their families, health and safety training, and blood services. You can be part of this humanitarian mission by volunteering to donate blood or platelets in May.

Blood donations often slip in the summer when regular donors are vacationing and school is out of session, but the need for blood is constant. Blood donations in the weeks leading up to summer can help offset this seasonal decline.

Those who come to donate blood over the Memorial Day weekend May 23 through 25, 2015, will get a limited-edition, Red Cross-branded RuMe® tote bag, while supplies last.

If you are unable to give blood, you can still support the Red Cross by signing up to host a blood drive, volunteering your time, asking others to donate or creating a SleevesUp virtual blood drive.

To learn more about how you can become involved in the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross, download the Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS.
