wellnessOn Friday, September 26th I traveled to the Anytime Fitness in Weston, WI for the opportunity to meet an inspiring WPS member, Bruce Sopkowicz. Bruce is an active participant in the SilverSneakers® Fitness program.

The SilverSneakers Fitness program is a fun, energizing program that helps older adults take greater control of their health by encouraging physical activity and offering social events. Thousands of fitness centers located across the country allow members the opportunity to stay active in their local community as well as when they are on the road. To find a participating Fitness Location near you visit the SilverSneakers website

We are proud of our member, Bruce Sopkowicz, who was selected as a regional finalist of the Richard L. Swanson Inspiration Award on Friday. This award honors a member of the SilverSneakers® Fitness program whose healthy behavior has made a difference in his or her own life and has inspired others along the way. The award preserves the memory of SilverSneakers founder Mary Swanson’s father, who served as the inspiration for the nationally-acclaimed fitness program.

In my short time I spent with Bruce, I can see why he was recommended for the award.  He was full of energy, had many great stories, and immediately following the presentation of his award he went right to work on some of his favorite machines.

Congratulations, Bruce!

More about Bruce Sopkowicz

Bruce is such an inspiration to anyone who knows him. He has been a member of Anytime Fitness for five and a half years. His ultimate goal is to maintain his fitness level and weight, while staying fit as he grows older.

He has good advice for anyone starting a workout program: "Start slow, build up gradually, keep it interesting, varied and fun, and be persistent!" I could not have said that any better.

By his own admission, his toughest obstacles to overcome in sticking to a workout or exercise routine are injuries that prompt him to modify his workouts or do rehabilitative exercises. His favorite activities are football, running, snowshoeing, hiking and biking, cross country skiing, but mostly just staying active. One day he hopes to see Australia and New Zealand, and with his determination and heart, one day I believe he will. We’re proud of you, Bruce!
