The American Academy of Dermatology has named May “Melanoma Skin Cancer Awareness Month.” Melanoma accounts for only 5% of all skin cancers, but it causes the most skin cancer deaths. During the last 30 years, new cases of melanoma have steadily increased with an estimated 76,100 cases expected in 2014. Of those 76,100, about 13%—or 10,000 cases—will turn fatal. Melanoma affects people of all races and, unlike many other skin cancers, impacts young and old alike.
