Water glassWhether you’re grinding out the work day until 5 p.m. or spending the day out in the sun, if you’re like me, you succumb to the dreaded 2:30 crash. Don’t mistake this post as an endorsement of the latest and greatest fresh-brewed technology or for that of a wonder-shot toting cowboy. There is actually a great, usually free way to stave off the afternoon yawns. Adequate hydration throughout the day helps keep your body operating smoothly and can keep you feeling refreshed.

The easiest way to stay hydrated is to make sure that you’re drinking the right amount of water. By consuming the recommended six to eight 8-oz. glasses of water each day, not only will the afternoon crash be easier to manage, you will feel healthier. It is possible to stay hydrated by drinking other fluids, but water is a great calorie- and sugar-free way to maintain hydration.

Without optimal hydration, moderate side effects such as dizziness and drowsiness can occur. In severe cases, dehydration can occur. This brings on much worse symptoms such as passing out and losing the ability to think clearly. In mild or moderate cases of dehydration, the remedy is to drink more fluids; in severe cases, the affected person should be brought to the hospital immediately.

Much like other summertime beverages, it is possible to overconsume water. This is usually only the case for athletes, especially endurance runners. These athletes need to maintain a level of sodium in their bodies to perform the strenuous activity. Too much water works to decrease the level of this sodium, putting the athletes at risk of seizures, comas, and death. In addition to plain water, these people should drink sports drinks with electrolytes and sodium.

The most important thing to keep in mind when considering how much water to drink is balance. Consider the type of activity you are doing when deciding exactly how much water to drink. Try to keep a glass or bottle of water with you so you can take sips throughout the day, and shake off that afternoon crash!
